Sirens
Solo exhibition
18.05 – 03.06/2017
On Friday 18th May 2017, at 20.00, Skoufa Gallery opens Amalia Sotiropoulou’s new solo exhibition titled “Sirens” which will run until the 3rd June 2017.
In Mythology, the sirens are associated with the sea, love and death. Their beauty and the unique melody of their singing mesmerizes whichever approaches them. Danger lurks at all times. This mythological symbol of the femme fatale inspires Sotiropoulou to capture the female charm in her photographs.
Iconic women of our time, like contemporary sirens who await for their victims, re-emerge in colour and light through Sotiropoulou’s artistic lens.
Amalia Sotiropoulou “embraces” the ancient Greek symbol of the femme fatale and she re-uses it with criticism and gentle sarcasm.
On one hand, the myth becomes a tool with which the artist attempts to understand, interpret as well as sneer at the reality of our time, where the contemporary man deals with new challenges, while experiencing his own Odyssey. On the other hand, the photographic lens examines the digital, almost ‘manufactured’ beauty and charm of a woman and proposes a world of images where the limits between truth and lies are not rigid.
The photographs of this exhibition make many references to the artist’s life as Amalia Sotiropoulou confronts through them her own self.
