PRESS RELEASE

Irene Kana at Skoufa Gallery in June
Opening day: 8th June 2023, 19.30-21.30
Duration of the exhibition: 8 June – 1 July 2023

An important painting exhibition opens at Skoufa Gallery on Thursday 8th June 2023 at 19.30.

Irene Kana presents a series of 25 paintings dedicated to children, all of them produced during the last couple of years.

Her paintings unfold a new magical world in front of the viewers, with identifiable and un-identifiable elements at the same time.

Kana creates group portraits of little girls with her characteristic impasto technique and color palette. Through them, she emphasizes the importance of childhood and glorifies children’s beauty.

“Children are a symbol for the future and the present. They represent the most promising period of our life. They portray all the dreams and expectations that we hope to fulfill …”

In the catalogue that accompanies the exhibition, Manos Stefanidis states that:

“Irene Kana, in her last series of paintings, is engaged with the most ambitious of her subject matter so far: A series of group portraits, dedicated to the idealized lost childhood, becomes a fairy-tale or a nightmare that haunts her work. These paintings are seen as stories that she uses to put her iconic children to sleep, or as tender cuddles to her beloved cats. Through these paintings, it is as if she offers her protection to them, from all those dangers that she did not manage to avoid herself…”
