George Hadoulis – Acropolis Now

Skoufa Gallery is pleased to present George Hadoulis’ solo show titled “Acropolis Now”. The opening reception will be held on Thursday 16 September. The exhibition will be on view through Octobe 16th, 2021.
George Hadoulis’s comeback is marked by a new series of paintings with his favorite subject: Acropolis.
His new exhibition comprises of twenty-six pictures with playful vistas of the landscape around Acropolis and a series of ceramics.
In Hadoulis’s compositions, Acropolis – a symbol with multiple meanings, the landscape around the monument, the Athenian light and the contemporary urban conditions, all coexist.
Hadoulis manages to connect his artistic way of thinking with the two symbols associated with Acropolis: the power of democracy and the freedom of speech. In a conversation with Panaghiotis Doudonis, the artist confesses “While painting the series of the Acropolis, I realised how close the practice of painting is to the democratic process. As a painter, what I find interesting in democracy is the fact that it constitutes a creative process as a work in progress (The full dialogue is included in the catalogue of the exhibition).
Hadoulis’s paintings of Acropolis are all works on paper executed in ink, charcoal and oil pastel. They are testaments of the way he lives and experiences the Athenian landscape. To him, the area surrounding the monument is an element that fuels a never ending dialogue between symbolism and aesthetics. It is all about the presence of nature really; nature is the constant factor. This monument was created into this landscape and because of it, even. The environment shapes the work of humans and this, in turn, shapes the way we see it. Living in it you have no reason to be pessimistic, it is generously offered. Living in beauty makes you feel alive.”
The series of ceramics included in the exhibition are inspired by nature, mythology and the human figure. Their shapes and sizes vary but they all emanate an aesthetic euphoria and their vivid colors are a pray for joy and optimism.
