15.11 – 11.12/2012

Skoufa Gallery opens Natalia Mela’s exhibition of “Paperworks”. It is a group of sculptures entirely made of paper. Birds, goats, peacocks, hedgehogs and other animals come vividly to life. Her colorful work is a worship to the joy of life.
Natalia Mela was born in Athens in 1923. After studying at the workshops of Dimitriadis, Tombros and Apartis, she graduated from the School of Fine Arts in 1946. Her work was shown to many solo and group exhibitions both in Greece and abroad. In 2008, Benaki Museum organized a big retrospective for Mela. In March 2011, she received an honorary award in Fine Arts by Athens Academy.
Even though much younger, Mela matured among a group of older friends and mentors who were leading figures of the 30s.
Her work is consciously chosen to have a local character which is combined with elements of international modernism. In her own words, she explains her interest in her country. She states: “All I do is this”. Her world is poetic, mythological and erotic.
