Ornament

11 Dec 2016 - 14 Jan 2021

Group Exhibition

11.12 – 14.01/2017

The group art exhibition entitled “Ornament”, curated by art historian Elizabeth Plessa, will be inaugurated on Sunday 11 December 2016, at 12.00 noon. The exhibition will close on Saturday 14 January 2017.

Fourteen artists point out the role of ornament in their work, presenting a most significant aspect of art, from representational painting to abstraction. Using the motif, the graphic element and geometry, they ‘decorate’, ‘adorn’, ‘embroider’ their images. Lines, colours, papers and fabrics serve the main subject of the work, while at the same time they dominate the image becoming autonomous entities, which create visual dialogues between the content of the composition and the element of ornament. In the case of abstract art, ornament acquires a completely autonomous presence in the image: with the use of repetition it creates tension and rhythm in the composition and becomes the subject of the work. The common goal in any instance is, through the use of a seemingly non-spiritual means, as is the element of ornament, the quest for the spiritual in the work of art.
