PRESS RELEASE
«Twilight Zone»
Lena Schmidt
Opening : 18 November 2022, 19.00-21.00
Duration : 18 November – 10 December 2022
Skoufa Gallery is pleased to present Lena Schmidt’s solo exhibition titled ‘Twilight Zone’ which opens on Friday 18th November 2022 (from 19.00 to 21.00). The exhibition will be on display until the 10th of December 2022. It marks Skoufa Gallery’s first collaboration with the German artist.
Inspired by the natural disasters that hit our planet over the past years, Schmidt creates art that becomes an ode to the crucial issues of sustainability and the containment of the natural pores. Portraits of forests during the night, roads and electricity networks that are destroyed, are the distant echo of solitary towns. The bright ephemeral nocturnal lights mark the last elements of hope within reality’s shady idleness.
Ink, varnish, acrylic and carvings on plywood, are some of the techniques that Lena Schmidt uses. Her carved impressions of urban and natural landscapes add a twofold interpretation to her artistic creation, associating the optical representation to the natural provenance of her materials.
Schmidt captures the moment of rupture and of subjugation to the natural forces. Even though her art appears without any traces of human presence, it insinuates the disastrous consequences of the human’s making and of the technological achievements. She avoids any references to the reasons that led to these results and forms a link between her art and the spectator that is based on reasoning. The climate changes, the wildfires, the floodings are they all consequences of the human making and what are our responsibilities are some of the questions posed through Lena Schmidt’s art.
